Draft, rewrite and talk things through

**Reach for it when** you need a draft or a rewrite you'll edit.

**Stay with yours when** it already drafts and rewrites, and the check passes.

#### Check it on your job

Is this text allowed in this tool and account? (Lesson 5)

1. Give it a short note and one rule, such as a length or a word to keep.

**Pass:** the reply follows the rule.

**Fail:** it breaks or drops it.

Catches: a missed instruction.
2. Compare the reply with your note.

**Pass:** every fact in it is in your note.

**Fail:** it adds a date, name or detail you didn't give.

Catches: a made-up fact.
3. Ask for the shape you need, such as three short bullets.

**Pass:** the reply has that shape.

**Fail:** it has a different one.

Catches: a wrong format.

Example: made up to show the idea.

Prompt to copy:

Rewrite this note in three short bullets. Keep the date 12 March. Do not add facts that are not in the note.

Note: The supplier call is on 12 March. We still owe them the signed order.

#### How it works, with examples

- See: You type or paste the text. The tool sees what you put in the chat.
- Look up: A chat assistant writes from what you typed. It doesn't have to search the web. For something current, use Research with sources.
- Remember: The same chat can use earlier messages in that chat. A new chat starts again.
- Allowed: The account decides what you may put in. Check that before you paste (Lesson 5).

Read the reply against the rule you set. A chat can miss that rule, or add a fact you didn't give it. [Know which parts of an answer you can rely on](/start/check-the-output). [A made-up fact](/hallucination) is a common miss.

### Research with sources

Find out about something recent, with links you can open

**Reach for it when** you need an answer about something recent, and you'll open the links.

**Stay with yours when** it already searches and shows links you can open, and the check passes.

#### Check it on your job

Is this question allowed in this tool and account? (Lesson 5)

1. Ask about something that changed in the last few months. If your tool has a search switch, turn it on.

**Pass:** the reply links to pages.

**Fail:** it answers with no links.

Catches: an answer with no source.
2. Open every link.

**Pass:** each one opens a real page.

**Fail:** a link is broken or goes somewhere else.

Catches: a missing or wrong source.
3. On each page, find the claim and the date.

**Pass:** the page says the same, and the date is recent.

**Fail:** it says something else, or it's old.

Catches: a made-up or old fact.
4. Look for claims in the reply with no link.

**Pass:** there are none.

**Fail:** there's one or more. Don't pass those claims on.

Catches: a missing source.

Prompt to copy:

Find the latest change to [a rule, price or service you follow]. Say when it changed. Give a link I can open for each claim. If you can't find a page for a claim, say so instead of stating it.

All pass: stay with yours.

Any fail: try a tool of this kind on the same task.

- See: You type the question. The tool doesn't see your files unless you add them.
- Look up: This kind searches the web and shows links you can open.
- Remember: A new search doesn't need memory of an older chat.

### Ask your own documents

Get answers from your own files

**Reach for it when** you have a file and need an answer from it.

**Stay with yours when** you can attach the file in the chat assistant you already use, and the check passes.

#### Check it on your job

Is this file allowed in this tool and account? (Lesson 5)

1. Attach or open the file. Ask for one fact and the page or section it's on.

**Pass:** it names a page or section.

**Fail:** it doesn't.

Catches: a missing source.
2. Go to that page or section, and read the whole sentence.

**Pass:** the sentence says the same, with nothing after it that changes it.

**Fail:** it isn't there, or the rest of the sentence changes it.

Catches: a made-up or half-quoted fact
3. Ask something the file doesn't answer.

**Pass:** the reply says it's not in the file.

**Fail:** it gives an answer anyway.

Catches: a made-up fact.

#### How it works, with examples

- Look up: This kind reads your file. It doesn't have to search the web.

An answer can name a fact that is not in your file. Open the page it cites. [Know which parts of an answer you can rely on](/start/check-the-output). [A made-up fact](/hallucination) is a common miss.

We list a tool when all four are true:

- The maker publishes its own help pages
- You can use it now (or it's marked preview, in the maker's words)
- It does this kind's main job
- You can use it in the EU (the maker's own pages say so)

Some tools need a paid plan. We mark those, and every mark links to the maker's page.
