Support assistant starter: run it with your own model
The Support assistant page runs in your browser with no model and no key. This starter does the same steps with your own AI model, on your machine. You fill in one function and keep your key in an environment variable. This site never sees it.
Sample docs Northline Desk is not a real product.
What you need
- Node 22 or later. Node 20.10 and later also run it.
- An API key from the provider you already use, kept in an environment variable.
Steps
- Download the three files into one folder: sample-docs.json, support-starter.mjs, and support-starter.test.mjs.
- Run the tests to see what passes with no model:
node --test support-starter.test.mjs. - Fill in
callModel(). That function calls your language model and returns its text. - Run the tests again.
- Optional: fill in
embed()to add vectors. It receives the question first, then each chunk. Return one vector per text, or null to keep keyword search.
Before you add a model, 5 of the 9 checks pass: the hardware token question and the four 'retrieves' checks. The four 'answers' checks pass when your model cites the right document and gives its answer.
Starter
// Support assistant starter. Sample docs for Northline Desk, a made-up product.
// Fill in callModel() and embed() for the AI model you use. Nothing else needs a provider.
// Your key: read it from an environment variable in callModel(). Never put it in this file.
// Example providers, alphabetical and unranked: Anthropic, Google, Mistral, OpenAI. Use that provider's own docs for the request shape.

What changes in production
- On your real documents, search can miss the passage. Hybrid search. Reranking.
- Your assistant can quote a line that isn't in its source. Citation & grounding check.
- It can answer from a stale document, or one this person shouldn't see. Freshness & access control.
- It can follow an instruction hidden in a document. Prompt injection.
- A wrong reply can go out unless a check stops it first. Guardrails.
- Rerun these five test questions before every change. Production evaluation.
